Kevin Michael Richardson: Mallet or "Articulated" locomotives came in two varieties. "Simple Articulated," meant that boiler supplied steam to two sets of equal sized cylinders. "Compound Articulateds" had larger sized cylinders in the front and small ones in back. The compound design to allowed hot steam straight from the boiler to power the regular sized rear cylinders. The steam expelled from these would then be sent to the largest front cylinders. Their extra size compensated for the reduced pressure of the second hand steam they utilize. Recycling the system had its benefits, but other drawbacks to the compound cylinder system the limited the locomotives' success. But simple articulateds like the 2-6-6-6 Alleghenys. And 4-8-8-4 Big Boys enjoyed productive careers hauling millions of tons of freight for up to 20 years. The 4-6-6-4 Challenger type engine number 3985 is the largest operating steam locomotive in the world. It was reccomissioned and restored in 1981. And while number 3985 is currently being rebuilt. It's toured the country as a public relations ambassador, pulling excursion specials and occasionally working freight trains. Challengers were designed in the 30s as dual service locomotives to pull both passenger and freight trains. Over an 11 year period, 252 were built. The first of them and greatest number went to the Union Pacific, who reportedly named them after the challenging assignments they faced in Utah's wasatch mountains.

That time was the beginning of the end of the steam locomotives. From there, they still continued producing steam locomotives up until either the 1940s/early 1950s, & it wasn't until the 1960s when nearly all steam locomotives phased out & replaced by more diesel ones.

The Reading rr t1 class 4-8-4 Northerns and the G class Pacifics were impressive examples of steam power to view in service as shown in these film recordings.
